Anthony Davis Assigned to G League as Mavericks Eye His Return

The Dallas Mavericks have assigned Anthony Davis to their G League affiliate, the Texas Legends, marking a crucial step in his recovery from a strained left adductor. Davis is expected to participate in 5-on-5 scrimmages as he works towards an NBA return.

The 10-time All-Star has been sidelined since February 8, when he suffered the injury during his Mavericks debut against the Houston Rockets. Before exiting the game, Davis showcased his dominance with 26 points, 16 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 blocks in just 31 minutes.

Since acquiring Davis in a blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Mavericks have struggled, posting a 6-11 record. While initial reports suggested Davis might be shut down for the season, his G League assignment signals progress in his rehabilitation. With the regular season ending on April 13, Davis has a limited window to return and help Dallas push for the playoffs.

Dallas’ injury concerns extend beyond Davis. Guard Jaden Hardy (ankle) has also been assigned to the Texas Legends as he works towards a return. Meanwhile, the team has faced roster challenges, often playing with just eight active players due to injuries.

Two-way players Kessler Edwards and Brandon Williams are nearing their NBA game limit, adding another layer of complexity to the Mavericks’ rotation. Though Dallas has an open roster spot and qualifies for a hardship exception, their proximity to the first salary cap apron makes signing additional players financially tricky.

Earlier reports from ESPN suggested that the Mavericks were considering shutting Davis down for the remainder of the season. However, Davis has remained determined to return, and according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, the team is ramping up his workload in the coming days.

With just 13 regular-season games left, time is running out for Davis to make an impact. If he can return in time, his presence could be a game-changer for a Mavericks squad that has struggled since his injury. As Dallas fights for a postseason spot, all eyes will be on Davis’ progress in the G League and his potential return to the NBA lineup.
