Jalen Duren’s Contract Uncertainty Hangs Over Pistons as Training Camp Begins

The Detroit Pistons opened training camp without All-Star center Jalen Duren as uncertainty continues over his contract situation ahead of the new NBA season.

Detroit general manager Trajan Langdon said in May that the franchise wanted to secure Duren with a contract extension, but the two sides had not reached an agreement by Monday’s media day. Duren has until Thursday to sign a one-year qualifying offer if a new deal is not completed.

“We are excited to have him back when he gets back,” Langdon said.

Duren is coming off a breakthrough season in which he became an All-Star for the first time. He averaged 20 points and 10.5 rebounds as Detroit won the Central Division for the first time since 2008 and entered the Eastern Conference playoffs as the top seed.

His production declined in the postseason, however, with his scoring average falling to 10.2 points. Detroit needed seven games to get past eighth-seeded Orlando in the opening round before losing a seven-game second-round series against Cleveland despite holding home-court advantage.

Coach J.B. Bickerstaff made it clear that the Pistons still view Duren as an important part of their plans.

“I know there’s a lot of things out there being said, but he’s a huge part of what we do and where we are right now and the steps that have been taking,” Bickerstaff said. “It’s all love from our standpoint.”

At 22, Duren still has significant room to develop his offensive game. The 6-foot-10 center has been productive around the basket and on the boards, but adding low-post moves and a reliable mid-range shot could make him a more versatile offensive threat.

“He’s going to be a huge part of our team, regardless of the decision he does make,” Langdon said.

Duren was selected 13th overall by Charlotte in the 2022 NBA Draft before being acquired by Detroit in a draft-night trade.

The Pistons have already made a major commitment to another young player, handing Ausar Thompson a five-year, $155 million extension. They also added Isaiah Joe in a trade with Oklahoma City and signed veteran forward John Collins to a three-year, $51 million contract.

With star point guard Cade Cunningham under contract through the 2029-30 season, Detroit has continued building around its young core while adding more shooting.

“We should be able to spread the floor more,” Langdon said.
