Oklahoma City Thunder Suffer Double Injury Blow as Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace Face Surgery

Oklahoma City Thunder have suffered a major setback to their NBA campaign after guard Jalen Williams and forward Cason Wallace were both ruled in need of surgery following injuries sustained against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Williams suffered a broken left fibula and dislocated left ankle during Sunday’s 108-101 victory over the Clippers, while Wallace sustained a left labral tear.

Thunder general manager Sam Presti confirmed on Monday that neither player has a return timetable, with recovery estimates to be determined after their respective surgeries.

Williams’ injury is particularly concerning, with the possibility that the 2025 NBA champion could miss the remainder of the season.

The incident occurred with 1:14 remaining against the Clippers when Williams went down beneath the basket while driving towards the hoop.

Medical staff immediately attended to the guard as players from both teams watched in concern. His injured ankle was covered with towels before a stretcher was brought onto the court, causing a stoppage of approximately five minutes.

Speaking at a news conference ahead of Oklahoma City’s game against Phoenix, Presti praised Williams’ determination.

“Dub, as everybody knows, is as tough as they come,” Presti said.

“He’s an elite competitor. Even last night, just miraculous in terms of his outlook and the way he’s looking forward to attacking this. We’re going to be with him the entire way.”

Wallace’s injury adds to the Thunder’s defensive concerns, with both players having earned NBA All-Defensive Team recognition in recent seasons.

Presti acknowledged the seriousness of the situation but expressed confidence in their recoveries.

“Tough night last night,” he said.

“There’s no way to paint that differently.”

Oklahoma City have experienced several injury setbacks in recent years. Chet Holmgren missed his intended rookie season with a foot injury, while Nikola Topić has faced extended absences due to a torn ACL and testicular cancer.

Williams himself missed 49 regular-season games last season, primarily because of wrist and hamstring problems.

The 25-year-old has averaged 17.9 points across 251 NBA appearances and has already earned All-Star and All-NBA honours. He also played an important role in Oklahoma City’s 2025 championship triumph.

With the Thunder entering the season among the leading title contenders alongside San Antonio, losing two important players could complicate their championship ambitions.

Oklahoma City may eventually explore roster adjustments, including trades or a disabled player exception.

However, Presti stressed that the organisation’s immediate priority remains the players’ recovery rather than potential squad changes.

“I haven’t thought about anything related to the roster spot,” he said.
