Steve Nash Returns to Phoenix Suns as Senior Adviser Amid Franchise Rebuild

Steve Nash is returning to where his legendary playing career reached its peak—this time, in a front office role. The Phoenix Suns announced Monday that the former two-time MVP will rejoin the franchise as a senior adviser, a move confirmed by team owner Mat Ishbia.

“Steve Nash was an amazing player and exactly what the Phoenix Suns are all about,” Ishbia shared on social media. “His grit, toughness, and winning mentality have defined our organisation in the past, and I’m so excited to share that Steve is formally joining the Suns as a senior advisor and will help us define our future for years to come.”

Nash, 51, played ten of his 18 NBA seasons with the Suns, where he cemented his place among basketball’s elite. He won back-to-back MVP awards in 2005 and 2006, becoming the face of Phoenix’s high-octane offense under then-coach Mike D’Antoni. An eight-time All-Star and one of the league’s all-time assist leaders, Nash was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

Now, the Suns are calling on their former floor general to help guide them off the court.

Nash brings recent coaching experience as well, having led the Brooklyn Nets from 2020 to 2022. During his tenure, he compiled a 94-67 regular season record but was dismissed after a turbulent 2-5 start in the 2022 season. Despite the brief stint, Nash was credited for navigating a challenging locker room and managing superstar egos during Brooklyn’s title-chasing years.

His return to Phoenix comes at a pivotal moment for the franchise. After a disappointing 36-46 finish last season, the Suns have undertaken a major roster overhaul. The team traded Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets and bought out Bradley Beal’s contract in an effort to reset both cap space and team culture.

Nash’s new role is expected to be advisory rather than operational, offering insights into player development, team dynamics, and culture-building. His deep connection to the city, the franchise, and its fan base is seen as a valuable asset as the Suns work to reestablish themselves as contenders in the Western Conference.
