Derek Chisora has reversed his decision to retire and plans to return to the ring in December for a heavyweight contest against Murat Gassiev.
The 42-year-old had appeared to bring his career to a close in April, when he faced Deontay Wilder in London.
The bout was promoted as Chisora’s 50th and final professional fight, although the veteran never formally confirmed his retirement. Following his defeat, he continued to leave the door open for another appearance.
Chisora has now revealed that he expects to fight Gassiev before the end of the year. Speaking at an International Boxing Association news conference in Istanbul, he said the contest could take place in London or Manchester, with the exact location still being determined.
He also indicated that two titles could be at stake, including the IBA championship and the belt Gassiev currently holds.
He said: “December will be me versus Gassiev. We’re going to decide where, either in London or Manchester. We’re going to put two belts on the line, I believe, the IBA and the [WBA title] Gassiev holds.”
The proposed contest would give Chisora another opportunity to compete at the highest level of the heavyweight division.
His record stands at 36 wins from 50 bouts, and his career has included major contests against Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury, Joseph Parker and Vitali Klitschko.
His rugged style, durability and willingness to face leading opponents have made him one of Britain’s most recognizable heavyweights.
Gassiev would present a serious challenge. The Russian, a former unified cruiserweight champion, moved into the heavyweight division and, according to reports, currently holds the WBA “super” heavyweight championship.
His availability may depend on the division’s wider schedule, with reports indicating that Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua could meet for the title on December 11.
The uncertainty surrounding Gassiev’s championship status means the December bout may require further clarification before it is officially confirmed. The date, venue and final title arrangements have not yet been announced.
