Garcia announces title fight against Benn

Ryan Garcia has confirmed that his first WBC welterweight title defence will come against Conor Benn on September 12 in Las Vegas.

This brings to an end months of speculation around one of boxing’s most talked-about matchups.

Garcia revealed the fight during an appearance on NBC’s “The Tonight Show”, with the bout expected to headline a major card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

It will be Garcia’s first fight since beating Mario Barrios for the belt earlier this year, while Benn arrives after securing mandatory challenger status with a win over Regis Prograis.

The fight has been building for a long time. Garcia and Benn have traded insults online for more than two years, with both men repeatedly calling each other out.

Benn questioned Garcia’s consistency and discipline outside the ring, while Garcia insisted he wanted a real fight at 147 pounds against an opponent willing to meet him head-on. Now, both finally get what they asked for.

The matchup works because the styles are easy to understand. Garcia relies on speed, timing, and sharp counters, especially the left hook that has finished several opponents. He likes space to punch and prefers controlling exchanges from range.

Benn fights differently. He pushes forward constantly and tries to drag opponents into exchanges where he can work the body and wear them down.

Garcia has the faster hands and cleaner technique, but Benn has shown he can stay for long stretches and force uncomfortable fights.

Garcia’s movement and counters could punish Benn coming forward, although Benn will believe sustained pressure can break Garcia’s rhythm over twelve rounds.

The American remains one of boxing’s biggest social-media draws, while Benn carries strong support from the UK market and has steadily built his profile in the United States.

For Garcia, this is the chance to prove the welterweight crown truly belongs to him. Benn will take it as the biggest fight of his career and an opportunity to leave Las Vegas with a world championship.
