Joshua could face Fury this year

Anthony Joshua has set his sights on a long-awaited showdown with Tyson Fury in 2025, following a challenging year marked by a knockout loss to Daniel Dubois.

The former heavyweight champion remains determined to reclaim his status in the boxing world, and he plans to do that by facing someone he should have faced years ago. “2025, I am targeting Tyson Fury,” Joshua said recently while on a visit to Nigeria.

Despite his recent setbacks, including four career losses, Joshua is focused on improvement. “It makes me hungry, makes me want to work harder,” he remarked about his defeat to Dubois. He emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities in the coming year: “Time is of the essence, so I want to put in more work”.

Fury, who also faced disappointment in 2024 after losing twice to Oleksandr Usyk, is seen as Joshua’s primary rival. Promoter Eddie Hearn highlighted the significance of this potential clash, stating, “There’s no bigger fight in boxing, commercially, than AJ-Fury.” Both fighters are eager for redemption, even though some people might feel the fight is happening a few years too late.

The rivalry between Joshua and Fury has been brewing for years, with two previous attempts to schedule their bout falling through. However, 2025 could finally see them face off, even without a championship title on the line. Todd DuBoef of Top Rank noted that “the country would stop to see it,” showing just how highly anticipated the fight is.

Joshua’s determination is palpable as he reflects on his past performances. “When I look back, I believe I could have done more in 2024,” he said. “I have another chance in 2025 to do better”. He aims not only for victory against Fury but also for a potential third reign as heavyweight champion.

Boxing analysts suggest that Fury would be favored in this matchup due to his experience and recent performances. Barry Jones remarked that Fury has “plenty to offer” and would likely be a “massive favorite” against Joshua. The stakes are high for both fighters; a loss, even with no title on the line, could significantly impact their careers.
