UFC 320: Ankalaev vs. Pereira

UFC 320 takes place this weekend, and the main card of the event is the title rematch between Magomed Ankalaev and Alex Pereira.

This fight carries a lot at stake for both warriors, with Pereira aiming to reclaim the light heavyweight title he lost to Ankalaev just seven months earlier at UFC 313, while Ankalaev hopes for a successful title defence in his first match since becoming champion.

Ankalaev enters UFC 320 with a notable record of 21 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw. Known for his measured and technical approach, often leaning on his wrestling and grappling skills, Ankalaev secured the title by successfully neutralising Pereira’s aggressive style, winning the match by having the most points.

He’s earned a reputation for maintaining control and reaching into his wrestling base to keep opponents off balance, which has made him a tough challenge inside the octagon.

Pereira, meanwhile, holds a record of 12 wins and 3 losses since moving to MMA from kickboxing. The Brazilian has risen to prominence with a string of knockout wins, cementing himself as a fan favourite.

Before losing the title to Ankalaev, Pereira had defended his belt three times within 175 days, setting a UFC record for the shortest time to achieve three title defences.

His previous victories include a TKO win over former champion Jiri Procházka and other knockout performances that are proof of his ability to finish fights decisively.

The stakes for UFC 320 go beyond just the championship belt. Pereira is looking to redeem himself after a fight many saw as below his usual level, seeking to reclaim the title and restore his reign at the top of the light heavyweight division.

Ankalaev enters the fight determined to prove that his previous win was no fluke and to extend his hold on the division with successive title defences.

This rematch is also important for the light heavyweight division as it will likely determine the landscape for future contenders and title challengers moving forward.

Both fighters come with contrasting but effective skill sets, Ankalaev’s grappling against Pereira’s knockout threat, making this bout a battle of tactics between two of the best men in the division.
