AC Milan’s Champions League campaign came to an abrupt end after a 1-1 draw against Feyenoord at the San Siro, sealing a 2-1 aggregate defeat in their knockout play-off tie. Despite a dream start for the Italian side, a red card for Theo Hernandez and a decisive goal from Feyenoord substitute Julian Carranza ensured Milan’s elimination.
Milan entered the match trailing 1-0 from the first leg but wasted no time in leveling the tie. Just 36 seconds into the game, former Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez scored the fastest goal of this season’s Champions League. The Mexican forward capitalized on Malick Thiaw’s header from Christian Pulisic’s cross, nodding home from close range for his sixth goal of the tournament.
Sergio Conceicao’s side dominated the first half, with Tijjani Reijnders and Joao Felix both coming close to adding a second. Hernandez almost turned the tie in Milan’s favor with a powerful long-range effort in the 23rd minute, only to be denied by the woodwork. Rafael Leao also tested Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther, who stood firm to keep the hosts at bay.
However, Milan’s hopes of advancing suffered a massive blow early in the second half when Hernandez received a second yellow card for simulation in the 51st minute. With the Italians reduced to ten men, Feyenoord took full advantage. In the 73rd minute, Hugo Bueno delivered a pinpoint cross that Carranza met with a powerful header, beating Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan to seal the Dutch club’s place in the last 16 of the competition for the first time since 1974.
Despite their victory, Feyenoord will be without right-back Givairo Read for their next match, as he was shown a red card after the final whistle. The Dutch side, now under interim manager Pascal Bosschaart, will learn their last-16 opponents in Friday’s draw, where they could face either Inter Milan or Arsenal.
For Milan, the early Champions League exit marks another disappointment in European competition, adding pressure on Conceicao’s side to refocus on domestic success.
