Ancelotti reveals reason for Neymar’s omission ahead of World Cup qualifier

Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar’s omission from the Seleção’s September squad for World Cup qualifiers was a deliberate technical decision. 

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s clash with Chile, the Italian coach stressed that his choices were based on fitness and tactical considerations rather than injury.

“It was a technical decision based on many factors. Nobody can question Neymar’s technical ability. What we assess every day, and for every match, is physical fitness. That applies not just to him, but to everyone.” Ancelotti explained.

Neymar, who last played for Brazil in October 2023, had recently underlined that he was not carrying an injury, fueling speculation around his absence.

The 33-year-old forward has been in good form since rejoining Santos earlier this year, making 20 appearances with six goals and three assists. 

Yet Ancelotti, already shaping his long-term squad for the 2026 World Cup, appears intent on prioritizing players who can fit seamlessly into his collective system.

He admitted that from a pool of nearly 70 candidates, only those at peak condition will travel to North America.

With qualification already secured, Ancelotti has also opted to rest other star names, including Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, and Éder Militão, all of whom remain in Madrid. 

Injuries to Matheus Cunha and Alex Sandro have further thinned the squad, opening opportunities for younger faces and fringe players. 

Chelsea’s 18-year-old winger Estêvão is among those expected to feature, while Gabriel returns to the backline after missing the June internationals.

Brazil’s predicted lineup against Chile reflects this changing balance. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson is set to continue in goal, with Marquinhos marshalling the defence alongside Gabriel. 

In midfield, Casemiro will anchor the side with Bruno Guimarães, while the attack will be led by Raphinha in a central role, flanked by Gabriel Martinelli and Estêvão, with João Pedro up front. Ancelotti’s selections highlight his intent to blend youth with experience.

The Seleção, unbeaten since Ancelotti took charge in June, currently sit third in the CONMEBOL standings with 25 points. They face Chile on Thursday before traveling to La Paz to meet Bolivia on September 9.
