Argentina stun England with late comeback to reach 2026 FIFA World Cup final

Argentina produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat England 2-1 and book their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Wednesday night at Atlanta Stadium.

Two goals in the closing minutes from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez overturned England’s second-half lead, sending the defending champions into Sunday’s final against Spain.

Following a goalless first half, England broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon finished calmly after being set up by Morgan Rogers.

Thomas Tuchel’s side looked on course for a famous victory as they defended resolutely for much of the second half against sustained Argentine pressure.

However, Argentina’s persistence finally paid off five minutes from time. Captain Lionel Messi produced a superb pass for Enzo Fernández, who found the back of the net to level the score in the 85th minute and breathe new life into the South American side’s hopes of retaining the World Cup title.

With extra time looming, Messi again proved decisive in stoppage time, delivering another pinpoint assist for Lautaro Martínez, who fired home in the 92nd minute to complete a stunning turnaround.

England struggled to mount a response in the closing moments as Argentina expertly managed the game to secure their place in a second consecutive World Cup final.

The result ended England’s hopes of reaching their first men’s World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 1966.

Despite an impressive tournament run under Thomas Tuchel, the Three Lions were left devastated after conceding twice in the closing stages, with players collapsing to the turf at the final whistle while Argentina celebrated another memorable victory.

Argentina will now face Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final in New Jersey, with the reigning champions aiming to successfully defend their crown. a

England, meanwhile, will turn their attention to the third-place playoff against France as they look to finish their campaign on a positive note after another painful World Cup semi-final exit.
