Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions all but dissolved on Wednesday night as a spirited Crystal Palace held them to a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium, forcing Mikel Arteta’s side to settle for a solitary point and allowing Liverpool to inch closer to a record-equalling 20th English crown.
The Gunners, sitting second with 67 points, needed a win to realistically keep pace with league leaders Liverpool. Instead, they delivered another frustrating performance that has become all too familiar in recent weeks — their 13th draw of the season and fifth in their last eight matches.
Despite early control and goals from Jakub Kiwior and Leandro Trossard, Arsenal failed to close out the match. Kiwior opened the scoring with a well-placed header, and Trossard doubled the lead with a composed finish before halftime. However, Crystal Palace never looked overwhelmed.
Eberechi Eze’s superb volley from Adam Wharton’s corner halved the deficit, energizing the visitors. Palace’s resilience shone brightest in the closing stages when Jean-Philippe Mateta, coming off the bench, delivered a moment of brilliance. Latching onto a loose ball after a mistake by William Saliba, Mateta lofted a sublime chip over goalkeeper David Raya in the 83rd minute to silence the Emirates.
Still sporting a protective ear covering from a recent injury, Mateta’s strike was both clinical and symbolic of Palace’s fighting spirit. Manager Oliver Glasner had rested key players like Mateta and Ismaila Sarr with Saturday’s FA Cup semifinal against Aston Villa in mind. Yet, his team played with conviction and poise, using the match as a springboard for their cup ambitions.
In contrast, Arsenal looked off the pace, perhaps with one eye on their own massive Champions League semifinal clash against Paris Saint-Germain next Tuesday. Arteta’s side lacked sharpness in key moments and were punished by a Palace team that refused to roll over.
Had Arsenal lost, Liverpool would have been crowned champions on the night. Instead, Jürgen Klopp’s side can clinch the title with just one point when they host Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.
For Palace, currently 12th in the table, the performance offers momentum heading into their biggest game of the season. For Arsenal, it’s another missed opportunity in a campaign that has promised much but delivered inconsistently.
