Atletico Madrid booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time in nine years after edging past Barcelona with a dramatic 3-2 aggregate victory, despite losing 2-1 on the night at the Metropolitano Stadium.
The visitors struck first through teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who gave Barcelona an early lead and set the tone for a high-intensity contest.
Ferran Torres then added a second goal, briefly leveling the tie on aggregate and putting Atletico under serious pressure in front of their home supporters.
However, Atletico responded with resilience and determination, eventually restoring their aggregate advantage thanks to a crucial goal from Ademola Lookman.
His strike proved decisive over the two legs, reigniting the home crowd and shifting momentum back in favour of Diego Simeone’s side.
Barcelona pushed relentlessly in the closing stages, throwing everything forward in search of another goal that would force extra time.
Ronald Araujo came agonizingly close with a late header, while Marcus Rashford was also involved in a dangerous attacking move that was ultimately cleared by the Atletico defence.
The tension intensified further when Eric Garcia was sent off for Barcelona, complicating their late push.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, the visitors continued to press, but Atletico held firm amid a roaring atmosphere inside the stadium.
At the final whistle, the Metropolitano erupted in celebration as Atletico secured progression to the last four.
It marked a significant milestone for Simeone’s side, while Barcelona were left to reflect on missed chances after a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful comeback attempt.
It’s the second time Atletico Madrid has knocked out Barcelona in the cup this season, after the Copa del Rey victory in a similar manner.
Diego Simeone’s side will face either Arsenal or Sporting Lisbon in the semifinals, with the two sides meeting at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday and the Gunners leading 1-0 from the first leg.
