Atletico Madrid lose at home to rock bottom Levante

It was drama all through as Atletico Madrid lost to Levante in the La Liga on Wednesday evening. The defending champions had only won two of their last six games in all competitions, having lost three, won two, and drawn one.

Diego Simeone’s side have since dropped in their race to retain the title they won last year, sitting 15 points behind current league leaders and city rivals Real Madrid.

Levante, on the other hand, are ten points away from safety with just fourteen points from 24 games. Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over the Champions was their second La Liga win this season.

It didn’t come easy though, but the victory was more deserved than a lucky win as the visitors had previously conceded 22 goals in their previous six La Liga defeats which even makes it more embarrassing for Atletico Madrid.

Last season saw the capital club flex one of the best defenses of the La Liga on their way to the title, but they have so far failed to replicate the same, having now conceded in ten out of their last eleven games in the La Liga this season.

Levante went into the lead early in the second half of the game through Gonzalo Melero nine minutes after the break.

Afterward, Atletico Madrid had a penalty shot in the second half which was waved off by the VAR on the hour mark. Diego Someone’s side thought they had broken through and levelled the scoreline when Angel Correa hit an overhead kick past the goalkeeper in second-half stoppage time, but the goal was ruled out for a foul on a Levante defender.

Jan Oblak was called into action almost immediately after as Mikael Malsa hit a long-range effort from almost halfway but agonizingly hit the crossbar before Oblak tried his luck with a header minutes later but to no avail as Atletico Madrid lost 1-0.
