Bae Junho races to fitness for South Korea’s World Cup opener

Stoke City playmaker Bae Junho is intensifying his recovery from an ankle injury as he aims to feature in South Korea’s opening match of the World Cup.

The talented midfielder was forced to limp off during the team’s final pre-tournament friendly against Trinidad and Tobago after suffering a heavy challenge.

Initial fears of a serious setback were quickly eased following a detailed medical assessment. Physiotherapists confirmed he had avoided any major damage, allowing him to remain with the national squad.

This week in Mexico, Junho has been undertaking individual training sessions under the supervision of the medical staff.

Encouraging signs emerged yesterday when he was spotted completing running drills, steadily increasing his workload as he pushes towards full fitness.

South Korea have been drawn in Group A and will kick off their campaign on Thursday against Czechia in what is a 3am Friday morning start for fans watching back in the UK.

The awkward timings present a challenge for Europe-based supporters eager to follow Bae’s progress on football’s greatest stage.

The squad’s second fixture sees them face tournament hosts Mexico at 2am UK time on Friday, June 19, while their final group game against South Africa is scheduled for 2am on Thursday, June 25.

These early-hour slots may limit viewership but will not diminish the excitement surrounding the team’s participation.

Head coach Hong Myung-bo, who famously guided South Korea to the semi-finals at the 2002 World Cup, is focused on creating positive memories this time around. “The World Cup is the dream for any player,” he said.

He added by saying most footballers start playing because they love the game. With development playing a key factor to grow , and finally have the chance to represent their country.

With his country’s campaign beginning soon, all eyes remain on whether Bae Junho can recover in time to contribute on the global stage.
