Barca closing in on Williams transfer amidst competition from Arsenal and Bayern Munich

Barcelona appear to be on the brink of securing the services of Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, despite strong interest from European powerhouses Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

The Catalan giants have surged ahead in the transfer race to land one of Spain’s brightest young talents, fulfilling the wishes of new manager Hansi Flick.

Williams, who has impressed both in La Liga and on the international stage, is reportedly Flick’s top transfer target this summer.

While Arsenal and Bayern Munich have both been monitoring the 21-year-old closely, Barcelona’s recent moves suggest they are now the favourites to clinch the deal. Chelsea were also previously linked with the winger, but it appears the Blaugrana are making the strongest push.

The club’s president, Joan Laporta, is currently evaluating the financial logistics of the transfer. Due to La Liga’s strict financial fair play regulations, Barcelona must ensure they can register Williams without breaching league guidelines. Once Laporta gives the green light, the club is expected to accelerate negotiations to finalize the deal.

The urgency behind Barcelona’s interest is clear. The team is looking to bolster its attacking options ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, especially after an underwhelming season in which they relinquished both domestic and European titles.

Hansi Flick is reportedly determined to add a dynamic wide player, with Williams perfectly fitting his vision for a faster, more aggressive frontline.

In addition to Williams, Barcelona are also considering Liverpool winger Luis Díaz as an alternative or complementary signing.

However, sources close to the club suggest that Williams is the clear priority. His pace, dribbling ability, and recent development have convinced the coaching staff that he could be a long-term solution on the flanks.

As for what comes next, Barcelona’s pre-season plans are still being finalized. The club is contemplating a tour of Asia to reconnect with international fans and build momentum ahead of the new season.

Flick is expected to use this opportunity to integrate new signings and solidify his tactical blueprint, potentially with Nico Williams playing a central role in the team’s renewed attacking force.
