Barcelona lose to Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou

History was rewritten on Sunday evening when Rayo Vallecano defeated Barcelona by an odd 1-0 scoreline at the Camp Nou. The result takes Real Madrid closer to the La Liga title, although the Los Blancos still need to win at least a game in their remaining fixtures.

Rayo Vallecano started brightly and led through Alvaro Garcia’s goal in the seventh minute of the game. Although Barcelona found the net minutes before the end of the first half, it was ruled out for offside.

Xavi’s side couldn’t find a way through, and they fell to their second successive defeat at home in the La Liga and their third straight loss in all competitions at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona was knocked out of the UEFA Europa League by German side Frankfurt with a 4-3 aggregate scoreline after a 3-2 win at the Camp Nou.

This was followed by a loss to relegation-threatened Cadiz by a single goal through Lucas Perez in the second half of the fixture that was played on the 18th of March.

It was followed by a win at Real Sociedad before losing on Sunday evening. Barcelona remains in second with 63 points, level on points with Sevilla in second.

Barcelona is in a comfortable position to make the UEFA Champions League spots, but Xavi still believes that Barcelona is still in a complicated situation.

“We deserved more, but we didn’t have the personality we needed to have. This is our reality. We’re in a difficult situation. We’re still in the Champions League race, but we’ve complicated our situation, and we must fight on.” Xavi said.

Barcelona still has five more matches starting with a home game against Mallorca.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid can now win the title if they avoid defeat against Espanyol, although they still have UEFA Champions League matches against Manchester City.
