Barcelona targeting Manchester City star as alternative to Julian Alvarez

FC Barcelona have identified Omar Marmoush as a surprise alternative to Julian Alvarez as they step up plans to sign a marquee centre-forward this summer.

Sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick have aligned on the need to strengthen the No.9 position, aware that the market for elite strikers is both scarce and expensive.

Alvarez remains the dream target at Camp Nou, but prising him away from Atletico Madrid is proving increasingly complicated.

The Spanish side have publicly insisted the Argentine is not for sale and are believed to value him at around €150 million, a figure Barcelona are unwilling to approach as they seek to balance ambition with financial prudence.

Unless Alvarez pushes for an exit, a breakthrough appears unlikely. That uncertainty has prompted Barcelona’s technical department to intensify their assessment of Marmoush, who is currently at Manchester City.

The Egyptian international previously impressed scouts during his prolific spell at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he earned a reputation as one of the Bundesliga’s most clinical forwards.

Marmoush joined City amid high expectations but has struggled for regular starts due to the presence of Erling Haaland.

Limited opportunities, injuries and competition have restricted his impact in the Premier League, with most of his appearances coming from the bench. Despite flashes of quality, he has found it difficult to establish consistent rhythm or goal output.

There has already been speculation that the 27-year-old could seek a move in search of greater prominence.

Barcelona view that situation as a potential opportunity, particularly as City may be open to selling for a fee lower than what they paid last year.

Flick, who is familiar with Marmoush’s profile from his time in German football, reportedly values the forward’s professionalism and adaptability.

Crucially, Marmoush’s versatility is seen as a strong tactical fit.

Capable of operating across the front line rather than as a traditional static No.9, he offers mobility, link-up play, and intensity, qualities that align with Flick’s high-tempo system.

While Alvarez remains the priority, Barcelona are positioning themselves carefully, ready to pivot should the Atlético pursuit collapse and Marmoush become attainable.
