Barcelona wins goal-laden Spanish Super Cup final

Barcelona retained the Spanish Super Cup with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in the final at the Alinma Bank Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The win marked a 16th Super Cup triumph for the Catalan club and confirmed back-to-back titles under head coach Hansi Flick, who also oversaw last year’s success against the same opponents.

Brazilian winger Raphinha was the standout performer, scoring twice to continue his impressive run of form.

He opened the scoring in the 36th minute with a low finish into the corner, before restoring Barcelona’s lead in the 73rd minute with a floated effort that ultimately proved decisive.

The first half ended in remarkable fashion, with three goals scored during stoppage time. Vinícius Júnior equalised for Real Madrid two minutes into added time, producing a dazzling run and finish for his first goal in 17 matches.

Robert Lewandowski then put Barcelona back in front, clipping the ball in off the post, only for Gonzalo García to level again moments later after a goalmouth scramble.

Real Madrid’s second goal came amid controversy, as García hooked the ball home after Dean Huijsen’s header struck the bar, with Barcelona players and coaching staff protesting that the half-time whistle should already have been blown.

The teams went into the break locked at 2-2 after a frenetic and ill-tempered spell. The second half remained tense, with chances at both ends, including a late opportunity for substitute Marcus Rashford.

Barcelona were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when Frenkie de Jong was shown a straight red card for a lunging challenge on Kylian Mbappé, who had returned from injury to feature off the bench.

Despite the late drama, Barcelona held on to secure the trophy and extend their recent dominance in the competition.

The victory marked their second consecutive Super Cup title, the first time since 2012, while Real Madrid were left to rue missed chances and defensive lapses in a pulsating final.
