Bayern Munich Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer Injured Celebrating Goal in Champions League Victory

Bayern Munich secured a crucial 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash on Wednesday night, but the win came at a cost. Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was forced off the field after injuring his right ankle — not during play, but while celebrating a goal.

The bizarre incident unfolded in the 58th minute, moments after Bayern’s Jamal Musiala scored the team’s second goal. Neuer, caught up in the excitement, jumped near the halfway line to celebrate, but landed awkwardly. The 37-year-old was seen limping shortly after and had to be substituted.

The injury paved the way for 21-year-old Jonas Urbig, a winter signing from Cologne, to make his Bayern debut. Despite the high-stakes environment, the young keeper had little to do as Bayern maintained control over the match, comfortably seeing off a Leverkusen side that was reduced to ten men.

“It happens sometimes,” said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany after the match. “It’s a pity for us, but we’ve always talked about the squad. That’s how we’ve come so far, in the league and where we are, and that’s how it’s going to stay. If it’s Urbig, it’s Urbig and we’re not going to worry about it.”

Neuer’s departure from the match marks the second time this season he has been unable to complete a game against Leverkusen. Back in December, the Bayern captain was sent off during a German Cup clash, which Leverkusen won 1-0. It remains the only red card of Neuer’s illustrious career.

Bayern’s win was a rare triumph over Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen, a team that has proven to be a thorn in their side this season. It was Bayern’s first victory in their last seven meetings with Alonso’s squad, giving them a crucial advantage ahead of the second leg next Tuesday.

Harry Kane, who scored twice on the night, including a penalty after Leverkusen’s Nordi Mukiele was sent off, highlighted Bayern’s attacking strength. However, Neuer’s injury could present a challenge for the Bavarians as they aim to progress in Europe’s elite competition.

With the second leg looming, questions remain over whether Neuer will recover in time. For now, Bayern may need to place their trust in the inexperienced Urbig, as they seek to build on their commanding first-leg advantage.

Neuer’s latest setback adds to a frustrating season for the goalkeeper, whose playing time was already interrupted by a lengthy injury layoff in 2023. His fitness will be closely monitored as Bayern look to keep their European ambitions alive.
