Bayern Munich claimed a 2-0 win over Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, becoming the first German club ever to win at the Estadio Metropolitano.
It was also the Bavarians’ first victory over Atlético on Spanish soil, and it lifts them to eighth in the league phase table ahead of Wednesday’s fixtures.
Bayern were without injured attackers Jamal Musiala, Luis Diaz, Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari, while assistant coach Aaron Danks was again in charge.
Atlético had the first chance after just two minutes, when Julián Alvarez curled a shot just wide from inside the area.
Bayern soon took control of possession and pressed the hosts high up the pitch, but the final ball was often missing.
Lennart Karl had an early chance in the 23rd minute after Dayot Upamecano won the ball and Harry Kane teed him up, but he fired over.
At the other end, Alexander Sørloth could not decide between a header and a volley as a dangerous cross from Pubill flew past him at the far post.
The first half ended goalless, with neither side managing a shot on target despite Bayern enjoying 61 percent of possession.
The breakthrough came in the 54th minute, when Karl pinched the ball from Robin Le Normand inside the box and lifted it past Jan Oblak.
Diego Simeone responded with a triple substitution, and Atlético finally tested Manuel Neuer through a shot from Llorente.
Upamecano then surged forward and saw his deflected strike tipped onto the bar by Oblak.
A minute later, Alphonso Davies won the ball back, and Kane picked out Konrad Laimer, who smashed it into the roof of the net to make it 2-0.
Upamecano thought he had added a third with a header from a corner in the 81st minute, but VAR ruled it out for a foul.
Kane failed to score, ending his run of netting in 10 straight Champions League games and coming one short of Cristiano Ronaldo’s record.
Neuer marked his return with his 164th Champions League appearance, moving him into third on the all-time list.
Bayern now turn their attention to Saturday’s Bundesliga trip to Mainz, their final game before the international break.
