Bayern Munich solidified their goalkeeping ranks on Tuesday, extending Sven Ulreich’s contract until 2026.
The seasoned German goalkeeper, now 36, will serve as the third-choice option behind Manuel Neuer, the undisputed starter for Bayern, and Jonas Urbig, who impressed as Neuer’s deputy last season during the veteran’s injury absence.
Speculation swirled around Ulreich’s future after he missed games at the end of the Rückrunde for personal reasons, with rumors in Germany suggesting a possible retirement. Bayern were linked with other goalkeepers, but the Bavarians are delighted to retain Ulreich’s experience in Bavaria.
His strong rapport with Neuer and popularity in the dressing room make him a vital presence off the pitch, while his reliability ensures depth in goal.
Bayern saw one goalkeeping departure this summer, with Daniel Peretz joining Hamburger SV on a season-long loan.
The Israeli shot-stopper, seeking regular minutes, will benefit from consistent Bundesliga action at Hamburg. With Ulreich’s extension, Bayern’s goalkeeping unit is now set, requiring no further moves in the transfer market for this position.
Meanwhile, Bayern are finalizing a major transfer coup. Diaz arrived in Munich on Tuesday from Liverpool, completing his medical and set to be unveiled to the media on Thursday.
The Colombian forward’s arrival bolsters Die Roten’s attack, a priority intensified by Jamal Musiala’s devastating injury.
The German star, sidelined after a Club World Cup quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain, is unlikely to return in 2025. To address this gap, Bayern are targeting VfB Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade as their next forward signing.
Ulreich’s extension provides stability in goal, while Diaz’s arrival and the pursuit of Woltemade signal Bayern’s ambition to maintain their Bundesliga dominance despite Musiala’s absence.
With Neuer leading the line and Urbig as a promising backup, Die Roten’s goalkeeping trio, anchored by Ulreich’s veteran presence, ensures they are well-equipped for the challenges ahead.
