Belgium coach plays down criticism after huge win over New Zealand

Belgium finally ignited their 2026 World Cup campaign after two disappointing draws, delivering a commanding 5-1 victory over New Zealand in Vancouver.

The result enabled the Red Devils to finish top of Group G and advance to the knockout stages, marking their joint-highest goal tally in a single World Cup match.

Following underwhelming performances against Egypt and Iran, Belgium responded strongly under pressure.

They dominated the encounter with an impressive 35 shots, the third-highest total in one game at the tournament, while maintaining an unbeaten group-stage record for the fifth time in their last six appearances.

Head coach Rudi Garcia defended his squad against the intense criticism they had faced in recent weeks.

Explaining to reporters, the manager revealed he trusted all his players and leaders. Garcia described the criticism as ugly and insisted the team had demonstrated their quality on the pitch.

He added that they had shown themselves to be immense players and that all Belgians should feel proud to have such talents representing the country.

The coach highlighted that the only meaningful response to negativity was through performance on the field.

He noted that Belgium had been far more efficient in front of goal than in the previous match against Iran, which proved to be the decisive difference.

The convincing win not only silenced some doubters but also boosted morale as Belgium prepare for the knockout phase.

With their attacking players finally finding clinical form, the Red Devils will hope this result signals a turning point in their tournament journey.

Fans back home will be encouraged by the display of dominance and character, especially after the earlier setbacks that had drawn sharp scrutiny.

The victory underscores Belgium’s experience and depth in major competitions. As they progress, Garcia’s belief in his squad appears validated, setting up an intriguing challenge in the next round.
