Chelsea revived their chances of playing in the next stage of the UEFA Champions League when they got their first win of the season in a 3-0 victory against AC Milan at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening.
The Blues started their UEFA Champions League season in an abysmal fashion, having lost 1-0 to Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia on matchday one before they played a 1-1 draw with RB Salzburg in Graham Potter’s first game as manager of the club after the sacking of Thomas Tuchel at the backdrop of the loss to the Croatian champions Wednesday’s game was the return of Fikayo Tomori and Olivier Giroud who both returned to Stamford Bridge.
After securing a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park at the weekend, Chelsea had the momentum all through the game on Wednesday as summer signing from Leicester City, Wesley Fofana, opened the scoring in the first half.
Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his second consecutive goal for the Blues as they made it 2-0 in the second half.
Reece James also made it 3-0 against a clueless AC Milan side. Chelsea are now off the bottom of the table but still need to get favorable results from their final three games, which start with a trip to San Siro.
Group E is now very balanced, with RB Salzburg now top of the table with 5 points after their 1-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb.
Chelsea are in second with four points while AC Milan are now third with four points and Dinamo Zagreb at the bottom with three.
Meanwhile, at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City got a 5-0 bashing of Danish side f.c. Copenhagen with Erling Haaland scoring a first-half brace.
Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez both scored in the second half after an own goal from the visitors had made it 3-0 just before the break.
