Fernandes’ Hat-Trick Sends Manchester United Into Europa League Quarterfinals; Tottenham Also Advance

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur both secured their spots in the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals on Thursday, with dominant performances ensuring their progress. Bruno Fernandes was the star of the night, scoring a hat-trick in United’s 4-1 victory over 10-man Real Sociedad, while Wilson Odobert’s brace helped Tottenham overcome AZ Alkmaar 3-1.

Fernandes Leads United Past Sociedad

At Old Trafford, Manchester United faced an early scare when Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty for Real Sociedad just 10 minutes into the match. However, Fernandes took charge, slotting home two penalties before completing his hat-trick in the 87th minute. Diogo Dalot added the fourth goal in stoppage time, sealing a 4-1 victory on the night and a 5-2 aggregate win.

Sociedad’s hopes faded further in the 63rd minute when Jon Aramburu was sent off with a straight red card. Despite the setback, United’s attacking display proved too strong.

“It was a good performance. The physicality was there,” United manager Ruben Amorim told TNT Sports. “Even without the sending off, you felt that the team was going to win this game.”

United’s quarterfinal opponent will be French club Lyon, which routed FCSB 4-0 to advance 7-1 on aggregate.

Spurs Survive AZ Alkmaar Scare

In London, Tottenham overcame a first-leg deficit to defeat AZ Alkmaar 3-1 at home, securing a 3-2 aggregate victory. Odobert opened the scoring in the 26th minute after a high press forced a defensive error.

James Maddison doubled Tottenham’s lead shortly after halftime, momentarily giving Spurs a comfortable advantage. However, AZ pulled one back when Peer Koopmeiners capitalized on a defensive mistake just two minutes after Micky van de Ven was substituted.

The decisive moment came in the 74th minute when Odobert scored his second goal from close range, assisted by a clever backheel pass from Dominic Solanke.

“We’ve progressed, which is the main thing,” Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said. “It got a bit nervy towards the end but we thoroughly deserved to progress.”

Tottenham will face Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarterfinals after the German side convincingly defeated Ajax 4-1, completing a 6-2 aggregate win.

Other Europa League Results

Rangers edged past Fenerbahce in a dramatic penalty shootout (3-2) after their tie ended 3-3 on aggregate. They will face Athletic Bilbao, which defeated Roma 3-1 (4-2 on aggregate).

Lazio advanced past Viktoria Plzen with a 1-1 draw, winning 3-2 overall. They will face Bodø/Glimt, who progressed despite a 2-1 loss to Olympiacos (4-2 on aggregate).

Conference League Highlights

In the UEFA Europa Conference League, Chelsea secured a quarterfinal spot with a 1-0 victory over Copenhagen, advancing 3-1 on aggregate. Fiorentina, Real Betis, and Rapid Wien also progressed.

With both Manchester United and Tottenham eyeing European silverware, the quarterfinals promise thrilling matchups as teams push toward the finals in May.
