Fernandes stays with Portugal as United monitor fitness issue

Bruno Fernandes will remain with Portugal for its upcoming Nations League matches, despite missing Sunday’s win over Norway.

The Manchester United captain is managing a fitness problem. United are in contact with Portugal about his condition.

Fernandes played 89 minutes in Portugal’s 1-0 win over Wales last week. He was then left out of the squad for the 2-1 victory against Norway.

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus said Fernandes had been playing with pain that he brought from Manchester United. The midfielder told Jesus he had been dealing with the issue for about three matches.

Jesus said he chose not to risk Fernandes against Norway. He wants the player in better condition for Thursday’s game against Denmark.

Portugal will also face Norway again on Sunday. Fernandes is expected to stay with the squad while his fitness is monitored.

The 32-year-old has featured heavily for United this season. He has started the club’s recent Premier League matches against Manchester City and Fulham.

He also played in United’s 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah. Fernandes took several heavy knocks during that match and was later seen limping.

Despite the discomfort, he continued playing for United. However, reports say he has been below his best in recent games.

Patrick Dorgu is returning to Manchester United for assessment. The defender limped off during Denmark’s win over Wales on Sunday, with a possible hamstring injury.

Dorgu has had hamstring trouble before. He missed three months earlier this year after picking up an injury in United’s win over Arsenal.

United will assess Dorgu at the club’s Carrington training base. The club will also continue to monitor Fernandes while he remains with Portugal.
