Enzo Fernandez scored a dramatic 94th-minute goal to earn Chelsea a 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Sunday. The result at the Etihad Stadium dealt a major blow to City’s Premier League title hopes.
It was a challenging week for Chelsea following the sudden departure of manager Enzo Maresca. Interim boss Calum McFarlane took charge for the first time, facing the toughest possible test away at the defending champions.
Manchester City dominated the first half. They controlled possession and forced Chelsea to defend deep in their own territory. The pressure finally told in the 42nd minute when Tijjani Reijnders found the back of the net to give City a 1-0 lead.
At half-time, McFarlane made bold tactical changes. He adjusted the team’s formation and brought on fresh energy. This allowed Chelsea to get tighter to City’s midfielders and start creating their own chances in the second half.
City had several opportunities to score a second goal and kill the game. Phil Foden and Erling Haaland both went close, but they lacked their usual clinical edge. Their failure to extend the lead gave Chelsea hope as the match entered stoppage time.
In the 94th minute, Malo Gusto broke down the right wing. His low cross found Enzo Fernandez in the box, who poked the ball home to stun the home crowd. It was Fernandez’s sixth league goal of the season, sparking huge celebrations from the visitors.
After the game, Chelsea captain Reece James praised the team’s fighting spirit. He highlighted how the players stayed focused despite the coaching changes.
In a show of unity, James pushed interim manager McFarlane to the front of the away end to take the applause from the fans.
For Manchester City, the draw feels like a defeat. They are now six points behind league leaders Arsenal. Pep Guardiola’s side has now started 2026 with two consecutive draws.
Chelsea remain three points off the top four, but this result provides a massive morale boost. They showed grit and determination to earn a point at one of the hardest venues in world football.
