Guardiola clarifies comments on self-harm after Manchester City’s 3-3 draw with Feyenoord

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued a statement clarifying his comments on self-harm during a post-match news conference on Tuesday. Guardiola made the comments as his team wasted a three-goal lead to succumb to a 3-3 draw with Feyenoord in the Champions League. Although the result ended the team’s 5-game losing run, it makes them winless in six.

During the news conference, Guardiola was asked about a scratch on his nose, to which he replied, “With my finger, my nail.” Before jokingly adding that he wants to harm himself before exiting the news conference with a laughter.

However, Guardiola’s comments sparked concern among some fans and mental health advocates, who felt that his remarks made light of the serious issue of self-harm. In response, Guardiola issued a statement on his official social media accounts, clarifying that his comments were not intended to trivialize the issue.

“I was caught off guard with a question at the end of a press conference last night about a scratch which had appeared on my face and explained that a sharp fingernail had accidentally caused this. My answer was in no way intended to make light of the very serious issue of self-harm.” Guardiola said in the statement.

Guardiola also expressed his awareness of the importance of mental health and the struggles that many people face every day. He referenced the Samaritans charity, highlighting one of the ways people can seek help.

Manchester City’s draw against Feyenoord has left the team 15th in the Champions League’s 36-team table while they are second in the Premier League, eight points behind leaders Liverpool, whom they face at Anfield on Sunday.

The match against Liverpool is expected to be a highly anticipated and closely watched encounter, with both teams vying for top honors in the Premier League. Manchester City will be looking to bounce back from their recent slump in form, while Liverpool will be seeking to maintain their lead at the top of the table.
