Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester United, with an option to extend for a further year, securing his stay at Old Trafford beyond the current season.
The 33-year-old defender, whose previous deal was due to expire soon, is understood to have accepted a pay cut in order to remain at the club he joined in 2019 for a then world-record £80 million fee for a defender.
Since arriving from Leicester City, Maguire has made 266 appearances for United, playing a key role in their recent successes, including winning the League Cup in the 2022–23 season and the FA Cup the following year.
The England international, who has earned 65 caps, expressed pride in continuing his journey with the club, describing it as an honour to represent Manchester United and its supporters.
Maguire’s time at Old Trafford has been marked by both highs and challenges. He was appointed captain shortly after joining by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but later faced criticism during difficult periods under successive managers, including Ralf Rangnick.
In 2023, he was stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag and came close to leaving the club after a transfer to West Ham was agreed, though he ultimately chose to stay.
Opportunities were limited during spells under Ruben Amorim, but Maguire has recently enjoyed a resurgence under interim boss Michael Carrick.
Since Carrick’s appointment in mid-January, the defender has started 10 consecutive matches, re-establishing himself as an important figure in the squad.
Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, praised Maguire’s professionalism and leadership, highlighting his experience as vital for a young and ambitious team.
The club also values his resilience and influence in the dressing room, especially amid expected squad changes, including the anticipated departure of senior midfielder Casemiro.
Statistically, Maguire’s presence has often coincided with improved team performance.
United’s Premier League win rate has been higher in seasons when he features, and his individual numbers remain strong, particularly in aerial duels, where he boasts one of the highest success rates in the league this season.
Despite injuries in recent campaigns, his consistency, composure, and leadership continue to make him a valuable asset for the club.
