Injuries pile up for Real Madrid despite close title challenge

Kylian Mbappé is set to undergo further assessments on a knee injury, though no surgery is planned at this stage.

The Real Madrid striker has been dealing with a problem affecting the external ligament of his left knee since the end of 2025.

The 27-year-old travelled to Paris, accompanied by members of the club’s medical staff, for additional tests.

A statement from his representatives confirmed the visit was made in agreement with Real Madrid to optimise his recovery process and plan his return to action.

Mbappé missed last week’s Champions League play-off second leg against Benfica and will also be absent for Monday’s La Liga fixture against Getafe CF.

His availability for next week’s Champions League last-16 first leg against Manchester City remains uncertain.

The club has stressed that no surgical intervention is currently being considered. Instead, the focus is on careful monitoring and rehabilitation to ensure the forward returns at full fitness rather than rushing back prematurely.

Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa described the decision to sideline Mbappé as a collective one. He said the player, coaching staff, and medical team agreed it was best for him to stop and recover fully before resuming competitive action.

Mbappé has been in outstanding form this season, scoring 38 goals in 33 appearances since joining the Spanish club in June 2024 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

While there is no clear timeline for his comeback, Real Madrid remain hopeful the lay-off will not be an extended one.

Meanwhile, The team suffered a last-minute setback ahead of their La Liga clash with Getafe CF on Monday, as midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has been ruled out due to an emergency dental issue.

The unexpected problem forced the 23-year-old to visit the dentist over the weekend, and he was ultimately left out of the squad, disrupting manager Alvaro Arbeloa’s plans at a crucial stage of the title race.

Camavinga’s absence is a significant blow for Madrid, who are chasing league leaders FC Barcelona.

Known for his versatility and energy in midfield, the Frenchman’s late withdrawal leaves Arbeloa needing to reshuffle his tactical setup as the team looks to secure three vital points.
