Isak Shines on World Cup Debut as Sweden Sweep Past Tunisia in Monterrey

Alexander Isak announced himself on the World Cup stage with a superb goal and two assists as Sweden opened their campaign with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Tunisia in Monterrey, moving to the top of Group F.

The Liverpool forward, who has struggled with injuries since his £125 million move to Anfield in September, delivered a trademark finish on the half-hour mark to put Sweden firmly in control. After collecting a pass following a strong run from the left, Isak drove into space and blasted a powerful shot into the bottom corner.

Sweden had already taken the lead in the seventh minute through Yasin Ayari. The Brighton midfielder punished a defensive mistake by Tunisia, rifling a stunning effort into the top corner. Despite the significance of the strike, Ayari chose not to celebrate. The goal came against the country of his father’s birth and also made him Sweden’s youngest World Cup scorer since Tomas Brolin in 1990.

Isak’s goal was created through excellent teamwork with strike partner Viktor Gyokeres. The Arsenal forward held off his marker near the halfway line before releasing Isak into space to score Sweden’s second of the evening.

Tunisia responded shortly before the break. Defender Omar Rekik headed home from a Hannibal Mejbri free-kick in the 43rd minute, reducing the deficit and briefly giving his side hope heading into half-time.

Any thoughts of a Tunisian comeback were quickly extinguished in the second half as Sweden took complete control. Isak turned provider on the hour mark, setting up Gyokeres to restore the two-goal advantage and put Graham Potter’s side back in command.

The Swedish striker was involved again late in the match. Just 12 seconds after entering the field, substitute Mattias Svanberg found the net from another Isak assist, setting a new World Cup record for the fastest goal scored by a substitute after coming on.

Ayari then completed the scoring in style. The 22-year-old unleashed another long-range strike to claim his second goal of the match and Sweden’s fifth, capping a dominant team performance.

With a convincing victory, five goals, and standout displays from both Isak and Ayari, Sweden made a powerful statement in their opening Group F fixture and established themselves as early group leaders.
