Kimmich urges caution despite favourable World Cup draw

Joshua Kimmich has cautioned Germany against expecting an easy passage through their World Cup group, despite analysts viewing it as one of the tournament’s more comfortable paths.

The Opta supercomputer has rated Group E as relatively straightforward for the four-time champions.

Germany face debutants Curaçao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador, beginning their campaign against Dick Advocaat’s side in Houston on Sunday.

With high predicted chances of progressing to the last 32, Germany are joined by Spain as one of the strongest favourites to advance from the group.

However, Kimmich believes the team must remain fully focused. He warned that recent history should make Julian Nagelsmann’s squad wary.

Germany were eliminated at the group stage in both 2018 and 2022 – the only times they have failed to advance from the first round since missing the 1950 tournament. In 18 appearances overall, those two exits stand out as rare disappointments.

Kimmich stressed the importance of taking each match seriously. He said they were not focusing on the overall tournament at this stage but on performing well in every individual game.

He hoped the team would make a strong start, noting that past tournaments had shown how crucial an opening result could be.

The captain added that they did not actually have such an easy group as it was sometimes perceived from the outside.

Germany will be based at Wake Forest University in North Carolina during the tournament. They warmed up with a 2-1 friendly victory over the United States in Chicago last weekend.

Following Sunday’s opener against Curaçao in Houston, the Germans will face Ivory Coast in Toronto on June 20 and conclude the group against Ecuador in New Jersey on June 25.

Kimmich’s message underscores a culture of respect for every opponent. While external assessments may label the draw as favourable, the team’s recent experiences have reinforced the need for concentration and humility.

Success will depend on translating confidence into consistent performances rather than assuming qualification.
