Leverkusen’s hunt for Wirtz heir: Tillman, Akliouche in focus

Bayer Leverkusen are actively seeking a successor for Florian Wirtz, with recent reports indicating an agreement with PSV’s Malik Tillman.

However, debate surrounds Tillman’s €35m release clause, which reportedly only applies to Bayern Munich, who sold him to PSV for €12m last summer.

The 23-year-old, born in Germany but representing the United States, contributed 12 goals and two assists as PSV, under Peter Bosz, clinched the Eredivisie title ahead of Ajax.

PSV denies the clause extends beyond Bayern Munich, though their history with unclear transfer terms, like Xavi Simons’ deal with Paris Saint-Germain, raises doubts. In 2023, Simons’ transfer revealed a €6m buy-back clause, not the €12m PSV expected, with €2m going to the player.

Bayer Leverkusen are also eyeing AS Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche to bolster their attack. Initial talks with the 23-year-old winger have occurred, but Monaco’s high valuation, with his contract running until 2028, poses a challenge.

Leverkusen face competition from other European clubs for Akliouche. Additionally, links to Como’s Nico Paz and PSV’s Johan Bakayoko suggest a tactical shift under new manager Erik Ten Hag toward a 4-2-3-1 formation. This contrasts with Xabi Alonso’s previous 3-4-2-1 system, which relied less on traditional wingers.

As Leverkusen aim to diversify their attacking options, their pursuit of versatile, dynamic players reflects Ten Hag’s vision for the Bundesliga side.

The potential signings of Tillman, Akliouche, Paz, or Bakayoko indicate a focus on youth and adaptability, positioning Leverkusen to compete at the highest level. However, navigating complex transfer clauses and rival interest will test their resolve in the transfer market.
