English Premier League side Liverpool failed to beat Danish side Midtjylland in their last group game of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening.
Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah became the Reds UEFA Champions League record goalscorer with his first-minute strike in the 1-1 draw.
Salah scored by running clear of the Midtjylland defense and putting the ball past the goalkeeper. His goal takes him past Steven Gerrard as the club’s record goalscorer in Europe’s elite competition with 22 goals.
The goal is his 106th goal in 170 games for the side.
The goal is also Liverpool’s fastest goal in the competition. Liverpool had already qualified for the knockout stage of the competition before the game.
Jurgen Klopp fielded a host of youngsters for the game, having had his squad hit with numerous injury problems.
However, this didn’t deter the Reds from extending their unbeaten run and keep their record to just one loss in 14 matches.
The Premier League Champions conceded through a penalty after goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher committed a foul on Midtjylland player Anders Dreyer.
Scholz scored the resultant penalty, which would eventually secure a draw even though both teams had potential winning goals chalked off by the Video Assistant Referees.
It was the host first with their 77th-minute goal through Alex Scholz was disallowed for offside; Liverpool forward Sadio Mane also had his late goal disallowed for handball.
Liverpool earned 13 points from their six Champions League games in the group stage of the competition this season, winning the group while Midtjylland finished bottom of the group with 1 point.
Meanwhile, Ajax dropped into the UEFA Europa League after losing to Atalanta 1-0 in the Netherlands. The Italian side thus progresses to the next round f the competition.
