Liverpool fell behind within four minutes, a clear marker of Villarreal’s early attacking threat. A sloppy header from Virgil van Dijk dropped into the path of striker Georges Mikautadze, who finished clinically past Alisson from a tight angle.
That early setback set the tone for a disjointed start by the Reds. Sloppiness plagued the side, except for Ngumoha, who dazzled down the right flank and posed a constant threat.
Before the half-hour mark, the visitors struck again. Ronald Araujo drifted out of position into midfield, allowing left-back Sergi Cardona to collect a through ball and finish coolly.
Liverpool’s defensive structure was the clear problem, whether by design or personnel shortcomings.
Araujo and Tsimikas were repeatedly caught high, leaving Van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet exposed in two-versus-three situations.
The first genuine Liverpool attack produced a goal. Alexis Mac Allister headed home a corner whipped in by Tsimikas.
Momentum shifted decisively. Just before the interval, Ngumoha chipped a clever ball that Cardona failed to deal with, and Araujo headed in at the back post to level the scores.
After the hour mark, the hosts still needed another goal. It arrived through Ngumoha’s invention and urgency.
He beat his marker with a single touch, drove to the byline and cut the ball back for Mac Allister to make it 3-2.
Wirtz then scored his first goal of the season in the 66th minute. Collecting the ball from Gakpo, he set himself and fired low into the bottom corner to extend the lead.
The second half was far from perfect. Villarreal substitute Tani Oluwaseyi reduced the deficit to 4-3 with a late strike, forcing Liverpool to dig deep and hold on for all three points.
The victory was hard-earned and imperfect, yet ultimately secured by moments of quality and resilience when it mattered most.
