Midfielder Rodri has said his past with Atlético Madrid would not prevent him from considering a future move to Real Madrid, noting that “you can’t turn down the best clubs in the world.”
The Manchester City player, now 29, suggested he remains open to new opportunities as his contract enters its final phase.
Rodri, who joined Manchester City from Atlético Madrid in 2019, has been a central figure in the English club’s success, making nearly 300 appearances.
However, with his deal set to expire next summer, the Spain international admitted he will soon need to hold discussions with the club about his future.
The midfielder also revealed a desire to eventually return to Spain, though he made clear that no direct approach has been made by Real Madrid.
Speaking about reported interest from club president Florentino Pérez, Rodri said any contact would be handled through his agent rather than directly.
Despite his previous ties to Atlético, Rodri pointed out that several players have crossed the Madrid divide in the past.
He referenced examples such as Thibaut Courtois and Álvaro Morata, who both played for the two rival clubs during their careers.
Rodri has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell under manager Pep Guardiola, winning multiple major honours including four Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.
His current season has included 28 appearances, following his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in 2024.
On the international stage, Rodri remains an important figure for the Spanish national football team.
With nearly 60 caps, he played a key role in Spain’s triumphs at the 2024 European Championship and the previous UEFA Nations League, and he is now aiming to secure his place in the squad for the upcoming World Cup.
Spain will play an international friendly against Serbia on Friday as preparations for the World Cup heats up.
