Manchester City delivered a commanding performance to beat Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday, moving three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scored in the second half as Pep Guardiola’s side took full advantage of Liverpool’s numerical disadvantage to secure an emphatic victory.
The match remained goalless at half-time, with both sides struggling to break the deadlock.
However, the contest changed in the 62nd minute when Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, leaving the home side with 10 players and giving City an opportunity to take control.
City needed just three minutes to capitalize on the dismissal, with Haaland opening the scoring in the 65th minute.
The Norwegian striker’s goal put the visitors ahead and shifted the pressure onto Liverpool, who struggled to contain their opponents after going a man down.
Jeremy Doku doubled City’s advantage in the 68th minute, finishing a move assisted by Elliot Anderson.
The goal further exposed Liverpool’s defensive problems as the visitors increased their control of the game and moved closer to a significant away victory.
Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute with an impressive finish after combining with Josko Gvardiol.
Anderson initiated the move with a pass to Cherki, who allowed the ball to run through to Gvardiol before meeting his teammate’s return pass and slotting it beyond goalkeeper Alisson.
The goal capped an impressive team move and effectively ended Liverpool’s hopes of a comeback.
The result came amid renewed scrutiny of Manchester City’s finances after the club’s first match since an independent commission found them guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules.
The allegations include claims that City used commercial partner contracts to disguise more than £830 million in secret funding, although the club has maintained its innocence and is contesting the findings.
Despite the controversy surrounding the case, City produced a performance that drew praise, with former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock highlighting the gulf between the two teams.
Liverpool’s defeat leaves the club facing questions over its performance and discipline, while City will take confidence from a dominant display that strengthens their position in the title race.
