Manchester United moved within touching distance of a Champions League return after beating Brentford 2-1 in an entertaining Premier League contest.
First-half goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko proved enough for Michael Carrick’s side, who now need just two more points from their remaining four matches to confirm their place among Europe’s elite.
United made a strong start and went ahead after 11 minutes. Harry Maguire directed a header towards the far post, where Casemiro reacted smartly to nod in from a tight angle.
Brentford had chances to respond, especially during a lively first half, but failed to take advantage of several clear openings. Their wastefulness would prove costly.
Three minutes before half-time, United doubled their lead. Bruno Fernandes created the goal, setting up Sesko for the finish. It was Fernandes’ 19th assist of the season, leaving him just one short of equalling the Premier League record.
The win keeps United firmly on course to complete the target given to them by technical director Jason Wilcox after Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January.
They could even have qualification effectively sealed before half-time of Sunday’s match against Liverpool at Old Trafford, depending on results involving Brighton and Bournemouth.
For Brentford, the defeat was a major setback in their push for European qualification. Keith Andrews’ side have now gone seven matches without a win in all competitions.
They will feel they should have taken something from the game. Dango Ouattara struck the post from close range in the second half, while other promising chances were wasted.
Mathias Jensen gave Brentford hope with a powerful strike three minutes from time, but United held firm. Mikkel Damsgaard had one final opportunity, but his late header went straight into the hands of goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
United survived the late pressure and left with three important points, while Brentford were left to regret missed chances.
