Manchester United Turns to Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim to Replace Erik ten Hag

Manchester United has reportedly parted ways with Erik ten Hag following a series of underwhelming performances, culminating in a 1-2 loss to West Ham. The club is now said to be negotiating a deal with Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches.

As per reports, Manchester United approached Sporting CP soon after Ten Hag’s dismissal, expressing interest in Amorim, whose contract reportedly includes a 10 million euro release clause. Sporting CP confirmed Manchester United’s interest in a statement to the Lisbon stock exchange, stating, “Manchester United have expressed their interest in recruiting coach Ruben Amorim and have said they are ready to pay the 10 million euro release clause.”

Amorim, 39, has rapidly gained recognition in European football for his tactical acumen and success in the Portuguese league. As Sporting CP’s manager since 2020, he led the club to remarkable heights, capturing the Primeira Liga title in his first full season in 2020-21 and repeating the feat last season.

Under Amorim’s guidance, Sporting CP achieved a commanding league campaign in 2023-24, amassing 90 points and boasting an impressive goal tally of 96, while conceding just 27 goals over the season.

This season, Sporting CP has maintained its dominance with an unbeaten record in the Portuguese league, winning all nine matches with a staggering goal difference of 28, having conceded only twice. These achievements show Amorim’s reputation for building both an attacking powerhouse and a defensively sound squad, qualities that Manchester United fans have longed to see reflected at Old Trafford.

Amorim’s managerial career began with a successful stint at Braga, where he won the Portuguese League Cup, a trophy he has since added twice to Sporting CP’s collection. His tactical style and emphasis on high-paced, dynamic play have earned him comparisons to other prominent managers, positioning him as a coveted prospect for clubs beyond Portugal.

Previously, Amorim was linked with Premier League sides Liverpool and West Ham, although those clubs ultimately opted for Arne Slot and Julian Lopetegui, respectively.

For Manchester United, securing a manager like Amorim represents a significant shift toward a new era and possibly a new style of play. Amorim’s background as a former Portuguese international, with 14 caps and a strong midfield presence during his playing days, has influenced his approach to coaching.

As negotiations continue, the prospect of Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford has ignited hope among fans for a fresh start.
