Mbappé Nears Historic Milestone as France Edge Brazil in High-Profile Friendly

France secured an impressive 2-1 victory over Brazil in an international friendly held at Gillette Stadium near Boston, with Kylian Mbappé edging closer to becoming his country’s all-time top scorer.

The match, played in front of a lively American crowd, saw Mbappé open the scoring just after the half-hour mark. The French captain latched onto a precise pass from Ousmane Dembélé before delicately chipping the ball over Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson. The goal marked Mbappé’s 56th in international football, leaving him just one short of Olivier Giroud’s long-standing national record.

France, who lifted the World Cup in 2018 and finished runners-up in 2022, faced adversity early in the second half when defender Dayot Upamecano was sent off following a VAR review. The referee determined he had denied a clear scoring opportunity, reducing France to ten men with over 30 minutes remaining.

Despite the setback, Didier Deschamps’ side showed resilience. In the 65th minute, rising striker Hugo Ekitike doubled France’s lead after a well-worked move initiated by Michael Olise. Ekitike calmly clipped the ball past Ederson, registering his second international goal.

Brazil, under the guidance of new coach Carlo Ancelotti, responded late in the game. Defender Gleison Bremer pulled one back in the 78th minute with a close-range finish following an assist from Luiz Henrique. However, the comeback proved insufficient as France held firm to secure the win.

Both teams were missing key players, with Brazil notably without several regular starters, while France coped without William Saliba. Still, Les Bleus fielded a formidable attacking trio featuring Mbappé, Dembélé, and Olise.

The victory offers a confidence boost for France ahead of the upcoming World Cup, where they will face Senegal, Norway, and a yet-to-be-decided play-off winner in the group stage. Meanwhile, Brazil will look to regroup before their next friendly against Croatia, aiming to build momentum as they chase a record sixth World Cup title.

Mbappé now stands on the brink of history and could equal or surpass Giroud’s record in France’s next outing against Colombia.
