McAllister’s late penalty condemns United to defeat at Brighton

Brighton got their revenge on Manchester United after beating the Red Devils 1-0 to boost their chances of making the European competitions next season in a game they played on Thursday night at the Amex Stadium.

Both sides met in the semi-final of the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium some weeks ago, with Manchester United moving to the final of the competition on penalties after Sully March missed the decisive sports kick.

The midfielder did not start the game on Thursday, but Brighton failed to beat a brilliant David De Gea in goal in the first half and for the most part of the second half. Kauro Mitoma was a huge thorn In the flesh of the Red Devils but was denied by defending from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and goalkeeper David de Gea.

As the contest went on, it became more physical as both sets of players clashed several times in the game before Brighton one a late penalty just when everyone thought the game was going to be a goalless draw where the points would be shared.

The penalty was given after a VAR check for handball with Alexis McAllister scoring a 90th-minute winner. Brighton manager De Zerbi was delighted with the results and immediately stated his hopes for the final games of the season.

“Really happy and delighted for the performance and result. We deserved to win the semi-final but lost on penalties, but today we won with a penalty. In both games, I think we played better than United. The last result was unfair. We are fighting for this target finish in Europe spot) but we have another six games more to play, very tough games, starting Monday with Everton. It will be a very difficult game.” Roberto de Zerbi said.

The results moved Brighton into 6th position ahead of Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, while United remains fourth.
