Bayern Munich secured its first away win in this season’s Champions League in emphatic fashion, defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 on Tuesday. Michael Olise’s second-half brilliance was the highlight as the German champions came from behind to maintain their momentum in the competition.
The victory marks Bayern’s third consecutive win in the tournament, lifting it to eighth in the standings with 12 points, enough for automatic qualification. In contrast, Shakhtar remains in 27th with just four points, three adrift of the playoff positions.
The game began disastrously for Bayern as Shakhtar struck in the fifth minute. Oleksandr Zubkov’s perfectly timed through ball found Kevin, who skillfully evaded defender Kim Min-jae before curling his shot into the far corner.
However, Bayern wasted no time in responding. Six minutes later, Konrad Laimer capitalized on a fortunate deflection off Olise’s attempted dribble, controlling the loose ball and firing it into the roof of the net.
Shakhtar nearly reclaimed the lead midway through the first half when Georgiy Sudakov was set up by Kevin, but the midfielder’s shot went wide from close range.
Bayern seized the momentum before halftime, with Jamal Musiala orchestrating a slick move. Musiala’s precision pass found Thomas Müller, who calmly slotted the ball past Shakhtar goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk in the 45th minute.
Shakhtar started the second half brightly, pushing for an equalizer. But Bayern’s defense held firm, and the visitors soon regained control. Musiala appeared to have extended the lead with a volley from a corner, but the goal was disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper. Moments later, substitute Sacha Boey was fouled in the box by Alaa Ghram, earning Bayern a penalty.
Olise confidently stepped up in the 70th minute, powering his shot into the top corner despite Riznyk diving the right way. The goal deflated Shakhtar, and Bayern began to dominate proceedings.
Musiala, who had been excellent throughout, added his name to the scoresheet in the 87th minute by pouncing on a loose ball in the box and firing home. Olise then capped the rout in stoppage time, weaving through Shakhtar’s defense with ease before coolly finishing into the bottom corner.
Bayern’s commanding performance sent a strong message to their rivals as they continue their pursuit of Champions League glory.
