AC Milan have Leonardo Spinazzola in their sight after his future at Napoli is looking increasingly uncertain.
What makes Spinazzola’s future uncertain is his contract situation at the club. His present deal expires this summer, and the experienced left-back is yet to receive any indication from the club that they wish to extend his contract beyond its June expiry.
This has led his representatives to begin exploring alternatives, with Milan making contact in recent weeks.
Spinazzola, a key figure in Napoli’s Scudetto triumph last season, is a versatile defender who could play anywhere in the defence, which he has done under Antonio Conte.
The defender has played 28 games this season, registering three goals and three assists.
Despite his contribution to the team’s success, the silence from Naples has grown deafening as the weeks pass.
According to reports, Aurelio De Laurentiis is keen on rejuvenating the squad, and the 33-year-old does not fit that profile.
This made his agent move proactively in response, approaching Milan about the possibility of signing him on a free transfer this summer.
CalcioMercato reported that timing is logical from Milan’s perspective, with Pervis Estupiñán’s brief time at the club expected to end.
Max Allegri will therefore need a left-back option, but much discussion is expected to take place in the weeks ahead of the summer transfer window.
Although Milan are aware of the terms being offered, they have yet to move further, and Spinazzola is not currently considered a priority target.
The experienced defender could also return to Juventus, having come through the youth system before moving on without ever truly establishing himself.
It was gathered that Juventus legend Giorgio Chiellini, who is his close friend, has been in contact with the player’s camp in recent days.
As things stand, it amounts to nothing more than an exploratory conversation rather than a concrete approach.
Although Spinazzola will want a Napoli stay, particularly if Conte remains in charge.
This could, however, change as the Italian tactician could also leave Napoli due to the vacancy on the Italian national team.
