Monaco to face PSV in Champions League qualifying

Eredivise team, PSV Eindhoven, will be playing AS Monaco in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

Both legs have been scheduled for August 2 or 3 and August 9.

This was following the third preliminary round of the Champions League made at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, on Monday.

Monaco will welcome PSV in the first leg at the Stade Louis II on 2 or 3 August, with the return in Eindhoven on August 9.

UEFA has also scheduled the draw for the play-offs for August 2.

Anyone who wins the tie will have another opportunity at the play-off round to reach the Champions League group stage.

However, whoever loses will be eliminated in the third qualifying round, or the play-offs will be relegated to the Europa League group stage.

During their last meeting last year in the Europa League group stage, the principality club beat PSV 1-2 in the Netherlands – with goals from Myron Boadu and Sofiane Diop – before drawing 0-0 at the Louis II.

Before the, they had met In 2003-04,  the most successful European season in Monaco’s history, which saw them reach the final of the UEFA Champions League. They eventually lost 3-0 to Jose Mourinho’s FC Porto.

AS Monaco also had the last laugh against the Dutch side during the time of current France coach Didier Deschamps.

The Ligue 1 side won in Eindhoven (1-2) before drawing 1-1 in Monaco.

However, PSV took their pound of flesh in the following season, in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 (1-0, 2-0).

As it stands,  Monaco had won more ties against them historically.

It is expected to be another tough duel as both clubs battle for the slot in the prestigious tournament.

Monaco will have to win the first leg convincingly in order to make the return leg easier for them.
