Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed that Hoffenheim captain Oliver Baumann will be Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper at the upcoming World Cup.
The decision comes after Baumann impressed during the World Cup qualifying campaign, where he started every match.
Baumann’s selection marks a significant shift for the German national team. Veteran Manuel Neuer had been the undisputed number one goalkeeper for the past four World Cups and also featured prominently under Nagelsmann during Euro 2024.
However, following that tournament, the Bayern Munich legend retired from international duty after an illustrious career spanning 124 caps.
Many expected Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen to step into the role as Neuer’s long-time understudy.
Yet, Ter Stegen struggled with injuries throughout the 2024-25 season, missing the majority of matches.
Additionally, he lost his starting position at club level after Barcelona signed Joan García this season.
In contrast, Baumann seized his opportunity. The 35-year-old featured in all six of Germany’s World Cup qualifying matches, keeping four clean sheets.
His performance was among the best in UEFA, with only Spain’s Unai Simón recording more shutouts (five) in their respective four-team qualifying group.
Nagelsmann has expressed strong confidence in Baumann, opting to remain loyal to the player who earned his place through consistent performances.
Although Monday’s international friendly against Ghana saw the Veteran named amongst the substitutes, with Alexander Nübel getting the nod between the posts at his home ground, the MHPArena.
Speaking about the team selection, Nagelsmann clarified that Nübel’s start is not an audition for the World Cup squad but rather a reward for his strong performances over an extended period.
With the World Cup on the Horizon, Nagelsmann continues to prepare his side earnestly as the Germans look to get a solid outing come June.
