Newcastle Secures English League Cup Final Spot, Ends Arsenal’s Hopes

Newcastle United is back in the English League Cup final, securing another opportunity to end its 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy. The northeast club, backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the second leg of the semifinals on Wednesday, completing a dominant 4-0 aggregate victory at a roaring St. James’ Park.  

Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon found the net for Newcastle, ensuring a second consecutive trip to Wembley for the club. Eddie Howe’s side will face either Tottenham or Liverpool in the final on March 16. Tottenham currently leads 1-0 in their semifinal tie, with the second leg scheduled for Thursday at Anfield.  

Newcastle, whose last major domestic title was the FA Cup in 1955, suffered heartbreak in last year’s League Cup final, losing 2-0 to Manchester United. This time, they will look to break the club’s long silverware drought.   

Arsenal entered the match with confidence after a 5-1 thrashing of Manchester City in the Premier League, but overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit proved too much. The Gunners struggled in the intense atmosphere of St. James’ Park, with their usually resolute defense looking vulnerable early on.  

Just four minutes into the match, Alexander Isak had the ball in the net, but his goal was disallowed for offside after a video review. Fans inside the stadium heard the decision directly from the referee via a wireless microphone—part of a trial in the English League Cup before a potential Premier League introduction.  

Arsenal nearly took the lead in the 15th minute when captain Martin Odegaard struck the post, but it was Newcastle who broke the deadlock four minutes later. Isak’s shot hit the woodwork, and Murphy pounced on the rebound to fire home, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.  

Arsenal’s task became even harder when Gabriel Martinelli suffered a muscle injury before halftime. Any remaining hopes of a comeback were extinguished in the 61st minute when Declan Rice lost possession just outside Arsenal’s penalty area. Fabian Schar’s sliding challenge sent the ball straight to Gordon, who made no mistake, drilling a low shot past goalkeeper David Raya.  

The defeat ended Arsenal’s hopes of reaching their first League Cup final since 2018, when they lost 3-0 to Manchester City. The Gunners, who have won the competition twice, last lifted the trophy in 1993.  

Newcastle fans took the opportunity to mock Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta in the closing moments, chanting: “Mikel Arteta, it must be the ball”—a reference to Arteta’s previous complaint about the League Cup ball being different from the one used in the Premier League.  

With the final now set, Newcastle will eagerly await the outcome of the Tottenham vs. Liverpool clash as they prepare for another shot at history.
