Barcelona’s pursuit of Nico Williams has hit a roadblock due to the player’s demand for a contractual guarantee about his future.
Williams wants a clause that would allow him to leave the club for free if Barcelona fail to register him on time, but the Blaugrana have firmly rejected this request.
The 22-year-old winger, who has a €62m (£52.5m) release clause in his contract, is eager to join Barcelona and play alongside Lamine Yamal.
However, Barcelona are hesitant to trigger the clause, fearing that registration issues could lead to Williams leaving on a free transfer within weeks.
La Liga president Javier Tebas has stated that it’s financially impossible for Barcelona to register Williams under current league regulations. Barcelona are being cautious, determined not to repeat past mistakes, such as the registration debacle surrounding Dani Olmo last season.
Despite interest from several major European clubs, including Manchester United and Bayern Munich, Williams has always prioritized joining Barcelona.
The Catalan giants are working to find a solution, with the potential sale of Ronald Araujo to Chelsea possibly freeing up space for Williams’ registration.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta needs to find a quick resolution to finalize the transfer. Williams had previously agreed to a six-year deal with Barcelona, with a salary in the region of €7-8 million net per season. However, the deal is yet to be completed due to the club’s financial constraints.
The transfer saga continues, with Williams’ future hanging in the balance. If Barcelona can’t register him, it could lead to a significant setback for the club and the player.
For now, Barcelona’s plans remain uncertain, and the club will need to navigate their financial challenges to make the transfer a reality.
Barcelona’s finances have been hit by the recent reconstruction works on Camp Nou, which they will reopen during the 2025/2026 season as they hope to defend the La Liga crown.
