Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is considering a loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor, with the Super Lig club identifying him as a potential reinforcement before their transfer window closes on 12 September.
The 29-year-old, currently on international duty with Cameroon, has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford following the summer arrival of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
Onana had been previously linked with Galatasaray, but the Istanbul side opted to sign Ugurcan Cakir instead. Cakir, who started in Turkey’s World Cup qualifying win over Georgia, joined Galatasaray from Trabzonspor in a deal worth up to €36m (£31.2m).
That transfer left Trabzonspor in need of a new first-choice goalkeeper, and club officials believe Onana could provide the necessary quality and experience.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has made no secret of his desire to reduce squad numbers, especially with the club missing out on European football this season.
Despite initial claims from United that they were comfortable carrying four senior goalkeepers—Onana, Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, and Lammens—the situation always hinted at a possible exit for one or two players.
Onana’s trajectory at Old Trafford has been turbulent since his £47.2m move from Inter Milan in 2023, a deal championed by then-boss Erik ten Hag.
Signed to replace long-time No.1 David de Gea, the Cameroonian endured a series of high-profile mistakes last season, including a costly error in the EFL Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby last month.
He also lost his place to Bayindir for United’s opening three Premier League matches this term after suffering a hamstring injury in pre-season.
Although he ended last campaign as United’s first-choice keeper, starting the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, Onana’s inconsistency has left his future uncertain.
A run of errors saw him dropped for the Premier League defeat at Newcastle in April, though he was briefly restored for the Europa League quarter-final win over Lyon.
With Trabzonspor actively seeking stability between the posts, a loan move could offer Onana a fresh start and regular football.
