Frank Lampard is eager to get going and wants to bring silverware to Stamford Bridge after being announced as Chelsea’s new manager on Thursday morning.
The 41-year-old won 11 major trophies during a 13-year spell as a player at the west London giants before short stints at Manchester City and New York City in MLS. He cut his teeth in management at Derby County last season, taking the Rams to the Championship play-off final before falling to Aston Villa, but the Blues legend has now returned to the Premier League and his spiritual home.
The former West Ham youngster succeeds Maurizio Sarri, who left Chelsea after one season in charge to manager Juventus, and has penned a three-year deal with the five-time Premier League champions. Having signed on the dotted line, Lampard admitted his pride and made it clear it will be straight down to business with the squad.
“I am immensely proud to be returning to Chelsea as head coach,” he said. “Everyone knows my love for this club and the history we have shared. However, my sole focus is on the job in hand and preparing for the season ahead.
“I am here to work hard, bring further success to the club and I cannot wait to get started.” The former England midfielder will be assisted by two of his staff from Derby, with Jody Morris and Chris Jones also on board, while Petr Cech was appointed as technical advisor last month.
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia is pleased to bring Lampard back to the capital, saying: “It gives us great pleasure to welcome Frank back to Chelsea as head coach. Frank possesses fantastic knowledge and understanding of the club.”
Chelsea are 21.00 to win the Premier League title, with Manchester City the favourites at 1.70.
