PSG Hold Narrow Edge After Nine-Goal Semi-Final Classic Against Bayern

Paris St-Germain secured a slender advantage in a dramatic Champions League semi-final first leg, edging Bayern Munich 5-4 in a breathtaking encounter at the Parc des Princes.

The match lived up to expectations as two of Europe’s most potent attacking sides produced a relentless display of football, with five goals scored in an electrifying first half alone. Bayern struck first when Harry Kane calmly converted from the penalty spot after Luis Diaz was fouled by William Pacho. However, PSG responded swiftly, showcasing their attacking depth and composure.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia ignited the comeback with a superb strike, cutting in from the left before curling the ball into the far corner. Joao Neves then gave the hosts the lead with a delicate glancing header, turning the momentum firmly in PSG’s favour. Bayern, though, were far from subdued. Michael Olise produced a moment of brilliance, weaving past defenders before unleashing a powerful shot to level the score.

Just as the first half seemed destined to end evenly, controversy struck. A stoppage-time penalty was awarded to PSG after Alphonso Davies was judged to have handled the ball. Following a VAR review, referee Sandro Scharer pointed to the spot, and Ousmane Dembele made no mistake, restoring PSG’s lead.

The second half continued in similar fashion, with PSG capitalising on Bayern’s defensive lapses. Kvaratskhelia grabbed his second after connecting with Achraf Hakimi’s dangerous delivery, before Dembele struck again at the near post to extend the lead to 5-2.

Despite the deficit, Bayern showed resilience. Dayot Upamecano pulled one back with a clever finish, and Luis Diaz added another after a precise assist from Kane, reducing the margin to just one goal and keeping the tie finely balanced.

With the second leg set for Munich on Wednesday, 6 May, Bayern remain firmly in contention. Meanwhile, PSG will look to protect their slim advantage in what promises to be another high-stakes encounter. The winner will progress to face either Arsenal or Atletico Madrid in the final in Budapest.
